Can I Hire an AI Consultant for a One Off Project With No Retainer?
Yes. You can hire an AI consultant for a single fixed price project, own what gets built, and never pay them another penny. For most small businesses that is the right way to start.
I say that as someone who offers a retainer. Most of the people I speak to do not need one, at least not at first. They need one job fixed properly.
Why so many small businesses get pushed into retainers
Monthly fees are good business for the seller. Predictable income, every month, whether much work happens or not. That is why so many agencies push them, and why so many small business owners I meet are paying £300 or £500 a month for something nobody can quite describe.
The tell is simple. Ask what was done last month, in writing. If the answer is vague, the retainer is paying for the relationship, not the work.
How a one off AI project works
You agree one job. It gets scoped in writing with a fixed price. It gets built, usually in two to four weeks. You use it while it is being made. At the end you own the accounts, the workflow, the data and the logins, and it keeps running without the consultant.
My builds are £2,500 to £8,000, fixed before we start. Six weeks after it goes live I check in once to make sure it is actually saving you the time it was meant to. That check is part of the price.
After that, you are free. If something else needs fixing later, you can come back for another project. Or not.
What you still pay each month
Most automations have running costs, but they are not a retainer. They are the bills for the services the tool uses: an AI model, an email service, maybe a small server. For a typical small business tool that is tens of pounds a month, and it goes on your card, in your name, not through the consultant.
You should know that figure to the pound before you agree the build. I broke the common costs down in what AI costs to run each month.
What happens if it breaks
A fair question, and the real reason some people sign retainers. Things do break. An app changes its settings, a login expires, a supplier changes a form.
A well built tool tells you when it fails rather than going quiet. And a decent consultant will fix small problems for a sensible one off fee rather than insisting you sign up monthly to get support. Ask about this before you start. Get the answer in writing.
When a retainer does make sense
A retainer earns its money when there is a steady stream of work. You have fixed the first bottleneck and there are three more queued up. You want someone looking after your search and AI visibility every month. You want to be able to ring someone directly when an idea lands.
That is what mine is for. It starts at £800 a month and you can cancel with 30 days notice, no minimum term. I will also tell you when you have stopped needing me. If a retainer has no way out and no list of work, it is not a retainer, it is a subscription to a promise.
Start smaller than you think
If you are not sure what the first project should be, the £297 AI Audit is a one off as well. A week later you have the one bottleneck costing you most, three ideas in priority order with rough prices, and a 30 minute call to go through it. You can take that roadmap to anyone, including someone cheaper than me.
All three options are laid out on work with me. For more on spending sensibly, read how much a small business should pay for AI automation and is an AI consultant worth it.
Quick answers
Can I hire an AI consultant without a monthly retainer?
Yes. A good consultant will scope one job, give you a fixed price, build it, and hand over everything in your name. You owe nothing after that apart from the running costs of the services the tool uses.
How much does a one off AI automation project cost?
My fixed price builds are £2,500 to £8,000 depending on the job, agreed in writing before any work starts. A £297 audit can come first if you are not sure what to build.
What ongoing costs come with a one off AI project?
Usually tens of pounds a month for the services the tool runs on, such as an AI model or an email service. These should be billed to you directly, not marked up through the consultant.
When is an AI retainer worth paying for?
When there is a steady flow of work, such as several bottlenecks to fix in turn or monthly search and AI visibility work. It should have a clear list of what gets done and an easy way out.
